Why Do We Run Away from Ourselves?

Writer: Maria MoteaMaria Motea

So often, we run away from ourselves without even realizing it. We run from pain, from fears, from the wounds we’ve buried deep inside. We tell ourselves we have to be strong, that we don’t have time to dwell on our emotions, that others need us.

And so, day after day, we put our souls on hold, postponing our feelings, losing ourselves in taking care of others, in work, in distractions.

But one day, the body starts speaking.

Through unexplained exhaustion. Through a lump in the throat that won’t go away. Through panic attacks, insomnia, pains that doctors can’t explain.

And then we ask ourselves:

"What’s happening to me?"

"Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?"

"Why can’t I live the way I used to?"

The truth is, we cannot run forever. No matter how much we try to hide from ourselves, there comes a moment when the soul demands to be heard.

Running Doesn’t Heal. Listening Does.

Many people dedicate their lives to helping others. They support, they give endlessly, they sacrifice themselves. And yet, in the silence of the evening, when they are alone with themselves, they feel an emptiness.

A void they try to ignore, but one that grows stronger.

Running from ourselves isn’t just about avoiding pain. It’s about forgetting who we are. It means living disconnected from our true essence.

And when that happens, the body tries to pull us back.

The soul never gives up on you. It sends signals, even through discomfort, just to make you stop. To make you listen. To help you understand what you truly need.

How Do You Return to Yourself?

Pause. Just for a few minutes. Breathe. Be present. The world won’t collapse if you take a moment just for yourself.

Ask yourself honestly:

What am I feeling right now?

What do I need?

What am I afraid of?

Don’t run from your emotions.

It may hurt to look in the mirror and see the wounds you’ve hidden. But denial won’t heal them. Allow yourself to feel.

Listen to your body.

If it hurts, ask it:

What are you trying to tell me?

Sometimes, physical pain hides an emotional wound that has been avoided for too long

Now Is Your Time to Heal.

Maybe you’ve been afraid to stop, to face yourself, to feel those emotions you’ve hidden for so long. Maybe you’ve told yourself you have to be strong, that breaking down isn’t an option.

Close your eyes. Take a deep breath.

Tell yourself, gently: "I am here. I see myself. I hear myself. I allow myself to feel."

Your soul is waiting for you. You are waiting for you.
